In the Kakheti region, you can see a lot of old historical monasteries. One of them is the Alaverdi monastery which is located 18 km from the town of Telavi in the Alazani-River valley. The monastery was founded ( 6th century,) by the Assyrian monk Joseph Alaverdeli. The present-day cathedral was built in the 11th century by king Kvirike III. An interesting fact is Alaverdi Monastery has it’s own Marani. It is a remarkable place where history is tightly bound to the modern world. The cellar is within the monastery walls and was built on the site of the old cellar of 8th -10th centuries and includes a large room of 12th-century construction with Kvevris buried in the floor.
The monastery offers a tasting room and ethnographic center where guests can taste wine in the authentic sites that hosted Georgian royalty and have been preserved by the monk’s humility.
Monks have been making their natural Honey–„Taplikatsi“.
Matsoni house
Matsoni is a Georgian fermented milk product, kind of similar to yogurt. Made from cow’s milk. Matsoni house is located just opposite to the Alaverdi Monastery, in the region of Kakheti. Here you can try Matsoni product served with honey or nuts and so on. There is even an ice cream made from Matsoni.
